Save the world or save your family in this week’s new additions to the Antstream library.
Two more games join the Antstream library this week. Classic run and gun action in both Thunder Hoop (Arcade) and Midnight Resistance (Amiga).
Thunder Hoop was released as an arcade game by Gaelco in 1992. When genius geneticist Dr. Genbreak goes into a rage and unleashes a bunch of mutants on the world, the only response is for another group of geneticists to create Thunder Hoop, a biological weapon, in the form of an angry dude, designed to deal with the mutant menace.
Combining run & gun with platforming, Thunder Hoop must make his way through the various levels, or zones, climbing ladders, leaping over gaps and obstacles, and using his powers to destroy the wide range of often quirky looking mutants, before eventually taking on the end of zone bosses. Thunder Hoop has a punching power that launches a projectile which has a nice variety of upgrades similar to scrolling shooter games, but can also jump on some enemies to defeat them, also allowing him to jump higher.
Data East's 1990 Amiga launch of Midnight Resistance is another run & gun game, but this time there are two brothers on a mission to rescue their family from King Crimson's evil drug empire. Data East originally launched the game as an arcade title in 1989, and Midnight Resistance also made an appearance on other home computers and on the SEGA Mega Drive.
As the player works through the levels of Midnight Resistance, fighting back a variety of soldiers and hardware, they will collect keys that allow them to enter a weapons store and unlock new guns, special weapons and extra ammunition, giving access to plenty of variety in ways to shoot the enemies that approach from in front, behind and above. There is plenty of action to be had in Midnight Resistance, and plenty of enemies to be shot.
Also, this week’s challenge is Iaijutsu Stand-off in Samurai Shodown. Defeat or be defeated in this challenge where one hit will decided who the victor is.
We’ll be back next week with more games to play anytime, anywhere.
